Importance of backgrounds: eliminate unnecessary items in the pictures background. Plain backgrounds are the best.
Rule of thirds: divide a picture shot into 9 grids (object should be in one of the middle corners of the grid). Move subject from the center of the picture
Lighting (artificial vs natural): sun should always be over your shoulder, have good back lighting, clouds are a good thing.
Focus: Hold the Shutter button down halfway. Use both hands to take pictures and hold the camera still. Keep the camera close to your body.
